Bat Protect

Bat Protect Thermal

Continuous thermal monitoring for nocturnal bat activity

Bat Protect Thermal is designed for wind farms that require reliable bat monitoring during low-light and night-time conditions. Using thermal imaging, the system detects bat activity around the turbine without relying on visible light, providing continuous monitoring when conventional optical systems are less effective.

Bat Protect Thermal

See what happens after dark. Monitor with confidence.

What it does

Bat Protect Thermal detects and tracks bat activity in the airspace around the turbine using heat signatures.

It provides operators with visual confirmation of nocturnal activity and supports more informed mitigation decisions in sites where bat presence represents an environmental or operational risk.

See what the eye can't

At night, bats are almost invisible against the sky. To a thermal camera, their body heat makes them shine. Watch how the system finds them, counts them in the zone around the rotor, and curtails the turbine only when the activity lasts.

Thermal imaging for intelligent bat protection

Detecting bat activity beyond visible light

Bat Protect™ Thermal uses advanced thermal imaging technology to detect and monitor bats flying around wind turbines during nighttime and low-light conditions.

Unlike conventional optical cameras, thermal sensors detect temperature differences, enabling the observation of flying animals without relying on visible-light illumination.

Combined with intelligent image processing, thermal monitoring supports bat detection, movement analysis, event recording and risk-based mitigation.

The system is designed for wind-energy environments where reliable nighttime wildlife monitoring is essential.

How Bat Protect™ Thermal Works

  1. 01

    Thermal Detection

Thermal cameras continuously observe the monitored airspace and detect relevant heat signatures.

  2. 02

    Movement Tracking

Detected flying targets are monitored over time to analyse movement and flight trajectories.

  3. 03

    Activity & Risk Analysis

Recorded observations and configured operational criteria support the assessment of bat activity and potential collision risk.

  4. 04

    Mitigation & Documentation

Depending on project requirements and turbine integration, the system supports alerts, automated curtailment and recording of relevant operational events.

Designed for nighttime monitoring

Continuous visibility when daylight disappears

Nighttime Detection

Thermal sensing enables the observation of flying bats without conventional visible-light illumination.

Movement Analysis

Track detected targets and examine flight trajectories within the monitored airspace.

Recorded Evidence

Store relevant thermal recordings and event information for subsequent review and verification.

Operational Integration

Connect relevant detection information with configured mitigation and turbine-control workflows.

Detection performance

Up to 150 m

Bat detection range

Bat Protect™ Thermal can detect bats at distances of up to approximately 150 metres under suitable conditions.

Actual performance depends on environmental conditions, target characteristics, sensor configuration and installation geometry. 150 m is an indicative maximum detection capability, not a guaranteed distance.

Intelligent turbine mitigation

From thermal detection to targeted protection

Bat Protect™ Thermal can support turbine mitigation by combining relevant detection and activity information with project-specific operating rules.

Depending on configuration, the system supports:

  • Continuous bat activity monitoring.
  • Analysis of movement and activity patterns.
  • Configurable risk and mitigation criteria.
  • Operator alerts.
  • Automated turbine curtailment where supported.
  • Recording of mitigation and turbine-response events.

The objective is to protect bats while reducing unnecessary operational interruptions. Mitigation follows configured project rules — not every detected bat automatically causes a shutdown.

Event recording and environmental reporting

Every relevant event becomes useful information

Recorded thermal events can support environmental monitoring, operational review and mitigation-effectiveness assessment.

Depending on configuration, available information can include:

  • Detection timestamps.
  • Turbine and camera identification.
  • Recorded thermal video.
  • Event duration.
  • Movement and trajectory information.
  • Mitigation actions.
  • Historical activity statistics.

Where connected to IRIDA's MRA Cloud Platform, relevant event data can be reviewed through the centralized monitoring, analytics and reporting environment.

How it works

Thermal cameras continuously monitor the surrounding airspace and detect moving heat signatures associated with bats.

AI-based analysis processes these detections in real time, helping distinguish relevant wildlife activity, track movement around the turbine, and support risk assessment during periods of low visibility or complete darkness.

Designed for

  • Night-time bat monitoring
  • Sites with significant nocturnal activity
  • Locations with limited or no ambient light
  • Projects requiring visual confirmation of bat activity
  • Wind farms with bat-related environmental obligations
  • Projects requiring continuous monitoring during curtailment periods

Why Bat Protect Thermal

Bat Protect Thermal provides reliable visual monitoring when daylight-based systems cannot, extending wildlife protection into the hours when bats are most active.
