Bat Protect
Bat Protect Ultrasound
Advanced acoustic monitoring for bat activity
Bat Protect Ultrasound provides continuous acoustic monitoring of bat activity around wind turbines using specialized ultrasonic sensors. By capturing the echolocation calls emitted by bats, the system provides detailed insight into presence and activity patterns during the hours when bats are most active.

Hear what cannot be seen. Understand when bats are active.

What it does
Detects bat activity through ultrasonic echolocation calls, providing a proven method for monitoring nocturnal bat presence and activity around wind turbines.
Listening to bat activity. Understanding the unseen.
Bat Protect™ Ultrasound uses specialized ultrasonic acoustic sensors to detect and record bat echolocation calls around wind turbines.
Because bats use ultrasonic calls for navigation and foraging, acoustic monitoring provides valuable information about their presence and activity, even when they cannot be visually observed.
Recorded acoustic information supports the analysis of bat activity patterns, environmental monitoring and project-specific mitigation strategies.
The system is designed for wind-energy projects requiring continuous acoustic monitoring and documented bat activity information.
How the Technology Works
01
Acoustic Detection
Ultrasonic microphones capture relevant bat echolocation calls in the monitored environment.
02
Signal Processing
Recorded ultrasonic signals are processed to identify relevant acoustic events.
03
Activity Analysis
Acoustic detections are analysed to evaluate activity patterns and variations over time.
04
Monitoring & Mitigation Support
Relevant information supports environmental reporting and, where configured, project-specific turbine mitigation decisions.
How Bat Protect™ Ultrasound Works
Ultrasonic microphones installed on the wind turbine tower detect bat echolocation activity. Acoustic information is processed by the Bat Protect edge server installed inside the turbine tower and transmitted through the configured communications network to the centralized monitoring platform.
Understanding bat activity through echolocation
Valuable information from every acoustic detection
Bat Presence Detection
Identify relevant bat echolocation activity within the effective acoustic monitoring area.
Activity Patterns
Analyse variations in recorded acoustic activity throughout the night and across monitoring periods.
Acoustic Event Recording
Maintain ultrasonic recordings and associated event information for subsequent review.
Environmental Intelligence
Support biodiversity assessments, environmental studies and mitigation planning with documented acoustic information.
Designed for continuous acoustic monitoring
Monitoring beyond visible observation
Depending on system configuration, Bat Protect™ Ultrasound supports:
- Detection of bat echolocation activity.
- Nighttime acoustic monitoring.
- Analysis of activity frequency and temporal distribution.
- Review of recorded ultrasonic events.
- Identification of periods of elevated activity.
- Environmental monitoring and post-construction studies.
- Analysis of activity trends over time.
Acoustic detection performance depends on bat call characteristics, species, sensor sensitivity, installation position, weather conditions and background noise.
Supporting intelligent turbine mitigation
From acoustic activity to informed operational decisions
Bat Protect™ Ultrasound provides acoustic monitoring information that can support the development and implementation of bat protection strategies.
Depending on the installed configuration and available interfaces, the system may support:
- Monitoring of bat acoustic activity.
- Identification of relevant activity periods.
- Evaluation of configured mitigation criteria.
- Operator alerts.
- Integration with turbine mitigation workflows where supported.
- Documentation of monitoring and operational events.
The objective is to support effective bat protection while avoiding unnecessary turbine restrictions. Not every acoustic detection automatically triggers a shutdown.
Environmental monitoring and reporting
Turning acoustic recordings into actionable environmental data
Recorded acoustic information can support environmental monitoring, operational review and biodiversity reporting.
Depending on configuration, available information may include:
- Acoustic event timestamps.
- Sensor and monitoring location.
- Ultrasonic recordings.
- Acoustic activity counts or indices.
- Temporal activity patterns.
- Historical monitoring information.
- Relevant mitigation records where integrated.
