Bird Protect™ Offshore

Advanced bird monitoring and collision-risk management for offshore wind farms

Bird Protect™ Offshore is IRIDA's dedicated solution for offshore wind projects requiring continuous, automated monitoring of bird activity in complex marine environments. It is designed to provide operators and environmental teams with reliable information on bird presence, movement and potential interaction with wind turbines, while supporting both operational mitigation and long-term environmental compliance.

Bird Protect™ Offshore

Continuous monitoring. Intelligent risk assessment. Offshore protection.

Bird Protect™ Offshore

What it does

Bird Protect™ Offshore continuously monitors the airspace around offshore wind turbines and across critical areas of the wind farm.

The system detects and tracks birds in real time, creating a detailed record of flight paths, movement patterns and activity around the turbines. This data can be used to assess potential collision risk, support environmental reporting and improve understanding of how birds interact with offshore wind infrastructure.

Where mitigation is required, the system can support automated or operator-assisted responses, including turbine curtailment strategies based on predefined risk conditions.

How it works

The Offshore configuration combines long-range optical monitoring, thermal imaging where required, Edge AI processing and secure remote connectivity.

Sensors installed on the turbine or other offshore structures continuously observe the surrounding airspace. Detected objects are analysed locally by AI algorithms that identify and track relevant bird activity, reducing the need to transmit large volumes of raw video for external processing.

Each event can be recorded together with its time, location, flight path and associated monitoring data, creating a structured and auditable record for operators, consultants and environmental authorities.

Designed for

  • Offshore wind farms
  • Nearshore wind projects
  • Projects located on important migration routes
  • Sites with high seabird activity
  • Projects with strict environmental monitoring obligations
  • Offshore projects requiring collision-risk mitigation
  • Long-term post-construction monitoring programs

Designed for offshore conditions

Offshore wind farms create different monitoring challenges from onshore projects. Large distances between turbines, limited physical access, marine weather conditions and the need for highly reliable remote operation all require a robust monitoring architecture.

  • Remote and continuous operation
  • Industrial-grade outdoor equipment
  • Secure communications
  • Edge processing at turbine level
  • Centralized monitoring
  • Long-term unattended operation
  • Scalable deployment across multiple turbines

This architecture allows each monitoring node to operate locally while remaining connected to the wider wind-farm monitoring environment.

Environmental monitoring and reporting

Beyond real-time protection, Bird Protect™ Offshore provides valuable data for environmental studies and regulatory reporting. The system can support:

  • Bird activity monitoring
  • Flight-path analysis
  • Migration studies
  • Behavioural monitoring around turbines
  • Collision-risk assessment
  • Post-construction monitoring
  • Environmental compliance reporting
  • Long-term biodiversity studies

By continuously collecting and structuring monitoring data, the system helps reduce dependence on short-duration manual observation campaigns and provides a more complete picture of bird activity over time.

Collision-risk management

When a bird or group of birds approaches a defined risk zone, Bird Protect™ Offshore can evaluate the event against configured operational rules. Depending on the project requirements, the system can support:

  • Automatic alerts
  • Operator notifications
  • Risk-zone monitoring
  • Turbine-specific responses
  • Automated or supervised curtailment

This allows mitigation to be targeted to actual detected risk rather than relying only on fixed schedules or broad precautionary shutdown strategies.

Centralized remote supervision

All offshore monitoring nodes can be connected to a centralized monitoring environment, allowing operators to review detections, events and system status remotely.

This is particularly important offshore, where direct access to equipment may be limited by weather, vessel availability and operating conditions.

Remote diagnostics and system-health monitoring help maintain availability while reducing unnecessary site intervention.

Why Bird Protect™ Offshore

Bird Protect™ Offshore brings IRIDA's bird detection and AI monitoring technology into the offshore environment, combining continuous surveillance, real-time tracking, collision-risk assessment and environmental data collection within a single integrated platform. The result is a system that supports both wildlife protection and wind-farm operation, helping developers and operators meet environmental obligations while maintaining efficient energy production.
